| Matthew Gordon recently completed his first year at Harvard Law School. Prior to law school, he earned a B.S. in biology from the University of Puget Sound and an M.P.H. in Public Health Genetics from the University of Washington. He is interested in issues at the intersection of law, policy, health and science. During his tenure at the DPH, Matthew Gordon primarily researched and analyzed legal and political issues related to embryonic stem cell research and pandemic influenza planning. Among other things, he assisted in the preparation of an educational pamphlet on umbilical cord blood banking for expectant parents, helped develop medical-legal frameworks for responses to mass casualty events, and analyzed potential legal ramifications of regulations affecting stem cell research.
"I learned a great deal about the law, but, equally important, I also learned about the processes involved in policy development and the promulgation of administrative regulations. The fellowship has not changed my immediate plans, but the exposure to the work of the attorneys at the Department of Public Health was invaluable, and it was very encouraging to see that they were actively engaged with very timely, interesting, and challenging legal and policy issues." |
