LAW 2117 Law and Public Policy
This course introduces students to the political and institutional considerations that influence the design and implementation of policy in the public sector. It develops an analytic toolkit for understanding why certain kinds of policies are preferred over others; how legal and bureaucratic arrangements facilitate or undermine new policies; and how entrepreneurs succeed in promoting new policies. An important theme is the extent to which societal, technological and economic changes are changing the way in which policies are chosen and implemented.
The course will have four components: lectures on key concepts; case discussions; guest speakers; and group projects in which students provide policy makers with advice on current issues. Evaluation will be based on an appraisal of short written assignments; the group project; a final examination; and class participation.
The course instructor is Professor Alasdair Roberts.
